Alonso vows to help Massa win title
"And if we do that and Felipe wins the race and I am second or third, I will be very happy for Felipe to take as many points as possible.
"For me, this is the only approach."
He has been linked with a move to Ferrari in the future as a possible partner for Brazilian Massa.
He may not be a championship contender, but Fernando Alonso has already made his mark on the decisive final stage of the season, with wins in Singapore and Fuji that made the title challengers look pale by comparison. After admitting he would be happy to help Felipe Massa to the crown, only Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix will reveal whether the Spaniard and his Renault are able to tip the balance.

Q: When you said yesterday that you would help Felipe win the championship, was that a sort of sweet revenge for last season?

FA: I prefer to see a Ferrari win than a McLaren coming from last year no doubt. What I find surprising is that such a notion had such a repercussion everywhere. When I see a tennis match I prefer one player over the other, the same goes for a soccer match. And when I see a fight between a Ferrari and a McLaren I prefer the Ferrari to win and I don’t understand all that hype about it.

Hamilton wins in China, Massa keeps title hopes alive

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton did everything but win the title in Shanghai on Sunday, as he scored his fifth victory of the season in a pluperfect style that left championship rival Felipe Massa floundering in his wake.

The Brazilian ran third for much of the race, astern of Ferrari team mate Kimi Raikkonen as they struggled vainly to keep the McLaren in sight. Then on lap 49 the Finn conceded second place, so that Massa left China with 87 points to Hamilton’s 94 - and with his admittedly fading championship aspirations still alive.

Raikkonen stayed clear of a closing Fernando Alonso, who pushed hard all the way through for Renault, and Nick Heidfeld led BMW Sauber team mate Robert Kubica home as the Pole saw his own title hopes die. His three points leave him on 75, too far behind Hamilton.

The race started with a bang. Hamilton easily beat the Ferraris into the first corner and Alonso finally got the better of McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen as they duelled over fourth. Further back, however, Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Bourdais tipped Jarno Trulli’s Toyota into a spin. The Frenchman was badly delayed; the Italian made one pit stop at the end of the lap and another a lap later, to retire.

Adrian Sutil and Kovalainen were the only other non-finishers. The Force India stopped on the entry to the pits on lap 13, and Kovalainen, whose McLaren had been smoking on the grid, fell from fifth place to the tail of the field on lap 35 when its right front Bridgestone tyre failed. Later he parked the car in the garage with a mechanical problem.

A one-stop strategy worked well for Timo Glock as he brought the second Toyota home seventh ahead of Nelson Piquet, who had a strong run in the other Renault. There were no points for Sebastian Vettel and Toro Rosso as they finished ninth, ahead of Red Bull’s David Coulthard and an aggressive Rubens Barrichello who was on good form for Honda. Kazuki Nakajima was another one-stopper, finishing 12th ahead of Bourdais, Red Bull’s Mark Webber, Williams team mate Nico Rosberg, Honda’s Jenson Button and Giancarlo Fisichella in the second Force India.

The race did not, in the end, clinch the title for Hamilton, but it did exorcise the ghost of Fuji and it leaves him needing only four points in Brazil. That means he can let the Ferraris and Alonso do what they like, as fifth place will do the job whatever Massa achieves.

Massa promises to fight Hamilton all the way
Ferrari's Felipe Massa on Sunday promised to push Lewis Hamilton all the way for the Formula One title after setting up a crunch season finale in front of his home fans in Brazil.
Massa admitted Hamilton's McLaren Mercedes was the better car at the Chinese Grand Prix, where he finished second behind the Briton to concede a seven-point standings deficit.

But he warned the title race was far from over, especially after his Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen's dramatic last-ditch championship win in Sao Paulo last year.

"It was not a good day, but it is not over. We go to Brazil and I am sure we will be very competitive there again," Massa said.

"I am going to fight as hard as I can to take the title all the way."

Massa passed a slowing Raikkonen in the closing stages to take second place behind Hamilton and boost his chances of challenging for the title.

"It was the best moment in the race for me! I caught him and then I passed him," said the Brazilian.

"So that was a good thing for me, but anyway it was not enough because we are fighting with McLaren and not each other.

"Today one McLaren finished in front, but we could manage second and third. So, for the drivers' championship it was not so fantastic, but for the constructors' it is very good."

The two Ferraris never looked like challenging Hamilton, who got off to a good start from pole position and built his lead to finish nearly 15 seconds clear.

"I didn't have a good start, I had a little bit of wheelspin, even though there was not high grip on our side. Then we just stayed in the same position," Massa said.

"We saw Lewis was a bit stronger in the beginning of the race, I mean he was stronger the whole weekend.

"He started to pulling away, maybe two or three tenths (of a second) per lap, and this for sure made his race much more comfortable and for us we were completely driving on the limit trying to reduce the gap, but it was not possible.

"We tried to push, as Kimi was trying to push, to get closer to Lewis, but today unfortunately, Lewis had a better car for the whole weekend."

Chinese Grand Prix - selected driver quotes
Lewis Hamilton, McLaren (1st):
"Everything just went right this weekend: our car has been simply phenomenal, I made one of my best-ever starts and had perfect balance during the race. I owe so much of that to the guys in the team - both at the track and back home; they did an amazing job so a big thanks to them. I’ve got a seven-point lead in the world championship, but that doesn’t allow me to take anything for granted. It might be another step towards my dream but we’ve still got to stay calm and keep our heads. I just hope we can pull through."

Felipe Massa, Ferrari (2nd):
"This is a great result for the team, less so for me. Today's race was a difficult one: we were not quick enough to fight against Hamilton. Losing two points does not mean that I have lost hope. I will continue to fight right to the very end and I can't wait to race in Interlagos in front of my home crowd: I will try my luck there - it will be the first time for a Brazilian - which will be a further incentive. There was no specific element that wasn't working on my car. It's just that today it was impossible for me to win. I feel a bit as though I'm in a penalty shoot-out in the football World Cup finals: we have missed the first two shots, while the other team has scored and therefore we cannot make any more mistakes and hope that they make three. It will be very difficult, but not impossible as we saw last year. The team is united and has faith: that is very important and nice too."

Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari (3rd):
"Today I had a good car, but it was not quick enough to beat our main competitor. At the start and after every tyre change, Hamilton managed to pull away, while when it got near to the pit stops I was able to go a bit quicker, but it was always too late. On top of that, three times, I came up behind backmarkers who cost me valuable time. We secured a very good result for the Constructors' classification. Now we go to Brazil where we must try and get a one-two finish and then we can see where we stand in both Championships. Felipe passing me? I am part of a team and I am well aware what they expect of me. I am out of the title fight and have to do the maximum because Ferrari can achieve both its objectives. It's a simple as that."

Fernando Alonso, Renault (4th):
"Fourth place is the best result that we could have hoped for today and so I am therefore extremely satisfied with my race. We had good pace, close to the Ferrari, which is another reason to be pleased. We have now won the battle for fourth place in the constructors' championship, which was our objective, and so we can approach the Brazilian Grand Prix with confidence and aim to make the most of this final race of the year."
